The time is nearing for your teen to transition from high school to college or trade school, are they ready?

And just as important, are YOU ready?

If they are applying for college, there are college entrance exams, essays, applications, and on and on. If they have graduated, there is preparing their dorm, thinking about making new friends and a managing their time and new schedule of life.  The process seems endless. And you want them to be independent, to learn to navigate this process on their own, but it’s hard. It’s hard to let go, and it’s hard for them to do something they have never done before.

Maybe your child is planning to go to university, to travel or work after high school, maybe join the Peace Corps. It doesn’t matter where they are going, even if they stay home, your relationship with them is changing.

And the opportunities and processes have changed since we were their age. It can feel overwhelming, confusing and especially challenging if our ideas for their future are different than theirs.

Even if our children have their lives planned out for themselves, we also understand as adults, life doesn’t always go as planned.

And we as their parents are having our own experience in this transition, but it is not always acknowledged or attended to as we focus on what is next for them.

But your experience, your concerns, your struggles… they all matter.

Your family dynamic is changing whether you like it or not, but you don’t have to go through it alone.

Your ability to be the best parent you can be in this process has everything to do with whether you have the support you need along the way.

When you feel more confident about what to expect as your child embarks out on their own adventure, and you feel anchored in your own support network,  your relationship with your teen will improve and you will have the capacity to support them in ways that work for BOTH of you.

And at the request of parents like you, we will focus on themes each month that relate to the timing of your teen’s process.

We can’t do this alone. I know many of you have tried.

The college counselors are focused on the teen and their process, but what about YOU?

As parents, we need support as much as our teens do during this journey.  We need our peers and we also need the pros. Other parents who are in it with us, and those who have been there, done that.  You don’t have to have all of the answers, and we will be there as you and your family find their way.
