Beyond Graduation

The Resilient Family: College Bound

Building Roots and Wings for the College Bound Teen

Is your teen graduating high school and preparing for college?

Are you and your teen both excited and nervous about what comes after high school?

Do you worry if your teen will manage his/her new responsibilities on their own?

Are you having difficulty seeing eye to eye now about their choices or communication?

Do you worry whether they will turn to you if they run into challenges?

Does this year's graduation feel inadequate to celebrate the realities of what is to come?

Do you want to make sure they learn valuable lessons about relationships, communication, your heritage and culture before they are on their own?

Do you have concerns about your teens ability to stay focused with their new found freedoms?

If you said yes to any of these, then let's really talk about how to create resilient young adults who will thrive in school and in life.
"The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence."
~Denis Waitley

There is no statement more true as a parent of an adolescent.

As your teen is preparing to head off to college, there is bound to be worry and doubt about whether they are prepared. Even without a pandemic, worries of your child leaving the nest are normal and many of our children are struggling to find their bearings in this high tech, low touch environments they are steeped in.

Adolescents are wired to seek independence and belonging. Heading to college is a big leap, so It is our job to bridge the gap with life skills and a sense of who they can turn to as they transition.

Our job is to teach them how to take care of themselves, to be good citizens of the world and guide them toward finding their internal compass.

Many cultures turn to ceremonies and rituals to anchor important lessons during rites of passage like this.  There is an attempt to do this with graduations, but it is primarily focused on academic achievement rather than the whole of the child gaining responsibility and freedoms.

Our kids need more if they are going to be truly prepared for life ahead in this uncertain world.
